Creating Special Colours

This red shade with spectacular depth can be achieved by three-coat application, where the midcoat is a translucent layer, coloured with very fine grinded pigments. This popular colour is seen more and more on various Ford cars, reaching production numbers over 180,000 globally. The perfect variant can be achieved by assessing the right amount of midcoat application.

The deep red colour of Ford R3 Burgundy Red was introduced in 2016, and is seen on the more exclusive models: Edge, Fusion, Flex, Taurus, Explorer, Expedition and Mustang. Building the colour in tri-stage application gives a three-dimensional depth to this elegant, deep red colour.

This deep red and brilliant colour is available as a standard colour on the SUV CX-5, where the very fine metallics in the groundcoat and translucent midcoat create a spectacular depth in the colour, embracing the curves of the car. This colour is built up in three layers and different shades can be reached by differentiating the amount of midcoat layers. The Sikkens Autowave MM 2.0 ground and midcoat have been granted with colour approval from Mazda.

A state of the art finish from Mazda, making use of very fine silver dollar metallics. This colour gives the impression that the vehicle’s body has been sculpted from a solid steel ingot. The repair of this colour is based on the standard 2 stage TDS application with an additional 2-3 over thinned basecoat layers, this is to achieve its specific fine effect and finish of this particular colour.

The Radiant Red 3T5 colour from Lexus was exclusively designed for the high-end models like RC F and entered the market in 2015. The secret of this very bright effect colour is the very fine metallic that is used in the groundcoat. As a result, light hitting the paint reflects off the red layer but also off the silver layer deep below, which adds depth and a metallic highlight to the red colouration.

The Siren Red is seen on various models in GM, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac since 2015 on their high-end models. The use of a very light tinted transparant midcoat gives an extraordinary depth to this vibrant red colour.

This dark, deep red is most known as Cajun Red, but goes also by the promotional names Red Quartz and Red Horizon. Introduced in 2017, it was primarily applied on Chevrolet, but also by GMC, Cadillac, Buick and GM.

The Andaro Red is part of Honda’s very exclusive finishes, only seen on the high-end NSX models. The bright and deep red colour complement the streamlined design of this hybrid sports car.

This vibrant blue specialty colour, that was only designed for the Honda NSX models, requires a real exclusive pigment to tint the semi-transparent midcoat exactly with the right tone. Because the exclusivity of this colour (less than 500 cars were produced with this colour globally), a RM midcoat is made available. The groundcoat can be mixed without the use of new toners; an MM solution is available in Mixit and Mixit Pro.

This sophisticated dark, deep red is seen all over the world on Chrysler, Dodge, RAM and Jeep models. Especially in North America this colour is gaining popularity since its introduction in 2015, with almost 40,000 car produced since.
